21st-century Totem - stools
The study of totems in various native culture led me to create contemporary totems in the form of stools, which combine industrial etching with the manual drawing of graphic elements. The illustrations appearing on the stools offer my interpretation of the experience of solitude and estrangement in modern society. Each stool functions as an independent totem; when they are piled one atop another, they produce a single totem that forms a rich visual continuum. When the order of the piled-up stools is changed, so is the narrative appearing on the totem – thus raising questions about the way we tell stories.
